My name is Joel DeHaan. I teach 5th - 8th grade English/Language Arts, writing, as well as 6th and 7th grade Bible. I grew up in Moline, MI. Christian Education has always been a part of my life; I attended Moline Christian School and South Christian High School. I am a graduate of Dordt College with a degree in English/Language Arts Secondary Education. I began my teaching career at Dakota Christian School in Platte, South Dakota teaching high school English. I taught there for four years before deciding to return to Michigan. I am so thankful to be teaching here at Fremont Christian! One of my favorite parts about teaching in a Christian school is walking with students on their faith journeys. Being able to teach about and within God's grace allows me the opportunity to "be real" with students in the sense that I don't always have the answers, I will make mistakes, life will be difficult at times, but God is in control of all things. While I may be working at FCS and in my classroom, my true work and goal is to be a Christ follower - it is my prayer that my teaching reflects that. One of my favorite verses is Colossians 3:23 which reads, "Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men...".
Outside of school and the classroom, my other interests include reading and writing. I am a big fan of running for both recreation and competition. My wife Allison and I love spending time outdoors hiking and camping and experiencing God's creation. In the winter months, I like to snowboard. I also enjoy spending time with family, traveling when I can, and listening to stories of all kinds!
