Spanish 1st: Maestra Kalvaitis
¡Hola! I'm Maestra Kalvaitis (formerly Chandonnet) and I am the first grade Spanish immersion teacher. It is my third year teaching at FCS and my third year living and working back in my hometown. I feel passionate about teaching Spanish and working with youth and feel blessed that God has directed my steps back to a place that I know and love.
I developed my love for the Spanish language and culture at a young age while in Spanish classes at St. Michael school. This led me to eventually study Spanish at Aquinas College where I also had the opportunity to study abroad in Costa Rica. After graduating, I spent 14 months as a missionary teaching English with the Salesian Missions in Okinawa, Bolivia. After returning, I worked as a parapro teaching English language learners at an elementary school in Kentwood, I taught Spanish at Orchard View and coached girls JV soccer. Last May, I was unexpectedly contacted (on my birthday!) about this exciting opportunity to teach Spanish Immersion at Fremont Christian. That email was an answer to prayers and I am reaffirmed by it on a daily basis while working with this incredible community of people at Fremont Christian and with my amazing group of "amigos" who inspire me everyday. I can promise you that a year ago if someone had asked me where I would be, I would not have responded with back in Fremont but God has a way and I could not be more grateful to have found this place. Proverbs 16:9 "In his mind a man plans his course, but the LORD directs his steps."
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, camping, biking, playing soccer, hiking and traveling.
