Mr. DeHaan is reading Counting by 7's by Holly Goldberg Sloan, with his 6th-grade students.
He chose to read this book with his students because it invites the reader to consider how one person can impact the lives of many. The book also explores the idea of community and how people can learn from one another.
These themes obviously carry over into what it means to be part of an authentic Christian community.
What happens when people try to understand each other, instead of simply noticing differences? What does it mean to love our neighbors? Can something positive come from a negative experience? How are our individual stories part of God's story?
All of these ideas and more are addressed as we read this book!
