Today, as we looked at God’s story in chapel, we took a look at “The Fall.” Some of our staff were involved in a chair skit, where one-by-one they became stuck to the Sin Chair, and couldn’t get free. But as each one read from the Word of God with the story of salvation, they were able to become free from being “stuck” in their sins. We all need the rescuer. We all need Jesus!

Mrs. Vegter’s Deep Hope is for her Middle School students is to embrace who God created them to be. To nurture their individual gifts and talents to “Inspire and Encourage” others to grow in faith and knowledge. Her story line is “Inspire and Encourage”. Students have been taking inventory on how they can inspire and encourage others. Their thoughts are expressed on a bulletin board in class as a way to remind them of the importance they have on others. They have also been reflecting individually on what their personal gifts and talents are. In addition, their classmates have provided each other with what they believe their classmate’s gifts and talents are. These activities help the students to see how they can reflect the “Habits of Living” in everyday life.

The outdoor education Kindergartens discovered how God created different habitats as perfect homes for the creatures that live there. They collected items from both a pond habitat and a forest habitat to compare the homes God made! Enjoy our photo collage of this experience!

Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Donkersloot have the joy of working with our OE Kindergarten students. Mrs Nelson’s deep hope for her students is that they learn of Gods love for them through his Word, his People, and his Creation. Mrs. Donkersloot’s class theme is Growing is God’s Light. With many opportunities to experience God’s creation, our kindergarten students are able to discover who God is and what he has done for us! We are learning how to love each other as God loves us!

Mrs. Yonker’s Deep Hope for her 2nd Grade Outdoor Education students is that they will delight in serving Jesus as they learn about God’s creation. Their storyline is We are God’s Gardeners. Students started the year by taking a close look at the words delight, serve, and learn. They discussed what these words mean and gave many good examples of what it would look like if they were delighting, serving, and learning. As the year progresses, students will discover ways to serve others that grow out of their learning experiences. For example, sharing flowers the class has grown with people in the neighborhood, sharing produce with those in need, or becoming pen pals with nursing home residents. It is Mrs. Yonker’s hope that her students will learn to delight in serving others as they grow as God’s Gardeners!

This week we had a lot of fun celebrating the season of Fall. Our learning revolved around pumpkins and their cycle of life. We did crafts, measured and compared our pumpkins. We integrated Math by opening our pumpkins, estimating how many seeds we thought were inside the pumpkin and then counting our seeds by making groups of ten. When we added all our numbers we ended up with 7,651 seeds. Those were a lot of seeds! We ended our fun week with a visit by the Kokx's family. They talked to us about the cycle of a pumpkin and brought us some yummy pumpkin snacks. It was a joy to share this special season with our first graders!

"miércoles de meriendas"/ Wednesdays are for snacks! Teaching for Transformation (TfT) is a framework that our school has adopted for the development of authentic learning experiences that are grounded in a Christian worldview with a focus on seeing and living God’s story. Once teachers and students are invited to see the story, a Teaching for Transformation classroom provides opportunities for learners to live the story. Formative Learning Experiences (Flex) is designed to form the students’ hearts and actions as well as their minds, equipping students to become people who live and breathe God’s story. We make ways for all students to use their gifts to meet the real needs of people by doing authentic work, a learning journey into engagement that shapes their identity both as a learner and as a disciple of Jesus. This year Kindergarten and Second-grade Spanish Immersion classes are doing a FLEX project called “miércoles de meriendas”/ Wednesdays are for snacks. Our classes are going to be selling snacks every Wednesday, in the Decker building, with the main purpose of raising money to donate to Hand2Hand in Fremont, Michigan. Hand2Hand is a nonprofit organization that provides food for kids facing weekend hunger in West Michigan and we want to be part of this organization by helping the children in our local community. Every Wednesday your elementary children, in the Decker Building, can bring money to school to buy their favorite snacks. We will have different kinds of snacks ranging in cost from 0.50 ¢, 0.75 ¢, and $1.00 Thank you for helping us give back to our community!

The 2nd graders were learning about layering and textures in computer class today! We enjoyed looking at Eric Carle’s creative work, and talked about how God makes us beautiful and complex. Then we practiced layering different colors, lines, spray, and shapes in the paint program, and tried some Eric Carle tortoises and snakes ourselves.

In Mrs. VandePol's Deep Hope with 3rd and 4th Outdoor Education is that students are curious about God's world, dig deeper into God's word, and discover God's wonders. In the classroom they have a poster that says, “What makes us wonderstruck?” Students are invited to add to this board each week with things that make them filled with awe and wonder. Here are some examples: “I was wonderstruck when I saw pink clouds!” “When I was raking leaves because there was a pile of leaves tall as a chair!” “The sandbox tree has seed pods that shoot out seeds at 150mph! Wow!” “When I saw an ant carrying a piece of hay!” “When I saw a big buck.” “I was wonderstruck by a bunch of seagulls flying together.” Students love to share these examples with the class and it gives them opportunities to point back to God and say, “Wow! God made that!” These examples help students learn more about God and give Him the praise for His beautiful creation

October 4-8th is SEED Week at FCS. That means we take some extra time to learn about who God is and how we can be Students Equipped to be Excited Disciples. With our theme “See the Story. Live the Story,” we invited different community leaders to come in and share their stories of God in their lives. We’ve heard about tough times – a parent dying, a broken hip, getting involved in the rough crowd and idolizing basketball, to a lost kitten (with more to come yet!). But we’ve also heard how Jesus was there in the tough times and just in everyday life - to being called in ministry and wonder if one is worthy, to recovery from illness and injury, to times of growing and prayer, to parents and grandparents who were faithful, to listening for God and having a relationship with him. We’ve had great times of worshiping together and times of reminders to have God’s Word in our lives. It’s been great to have our kids involved in raising their hands in worship and sharing answers and stories. We are thankful for Pastor Wayne Brunt, Pastor Nate Kooistra, Chris Bradford, Lauren Sherman, and Justin Visser, who shared with us. We were led in worship by some ladies from Resonate Church (including some ladies who are moms of our kids – Lauren, Jazzlyn, and Megan - and a former student - Alexa), and Pastor Aaron and Kristie from Harvest Church. We sang our theme songs of “King of Kings” and “My Story” – learning motions and then were blessed to hear these songs being sung and hummed in the halls and classrooms (and maybe at home?). We had different grades of students come up front and lead us in motions, and different students read verses for us in English and Spanish. What a blessing to hear about God, about his Word, about his plan of salvation, and how that can affect our lives. May we continue to SEE THE STORY, LIVE THE STORY!
